I was searching a few months back and found this forum and a 'closed' post in the cardiac section about my symptoms. Now, I'm coming back with some answers and thought I would share.

With a load of tests under my belt to find answers to my chest/throat issues (lump in my throat, food sticking, chest pain, need to burp but unable), I was no closer to any answer. I found much research that said that gerd and other throat issues are frequently dietary related, specifically food allergies.

I decided to do an elimination diet...well, a casual one. No dairy, no grains (especially wheat), no corn, no nuts, no coffee. I have been eating meat, and all the fruits/veggies I want.

Day three came and went with no throat tightness. It's the first in 3 months. I'm not completely sure but I'm farily convinced that I've got a food allergy or intolerance that is causing this.

I'll repost once I've got more details, but thought I'd share since this seems to be a common question.

That is interesting. Did you see an allergy specialist or did you just do this one your own? After various tests with a GI doctor, he said he couldn't see any evidence of GERD and referred me to an allergist. I see the specialist next month. My main symptom is a sore, tight throat. Sometimes I have pain between the shoulder blades, but no regular heartburn. I have had this for almost a year now so I'm getting pretty frustrated. Did you find it difficult to give up all those fooRAB? I would definitely miss bread!

I actually figured out something similar years ago on my own with joint pain. After seeing tons of specialists and getting lots of blank stairs, I started self-treating and self-diagnosising. Docs haven't always helped me. What triggered my realization back then was that advil made my joint pain worse and I started thinking about food. The more I read, the more convinced I became. By changing my diet, I managed to eliminated my joint pain. Eventually, my diet changed back (with some healthy alterations) and my joint pain never returned...but I always knew that food issues were responsible for many more healthy concerns than most people know.

With my joints I tried a very extensive elimination diet - trout, cod, carrots, sweet potatoes, pears, peaches, sea salt. Nothing but that and filtered water. Not even toothpaste. Use baking soda instead. Within 2 days my joints felt 100% better and I was miserable. ; ) I called an allergist to help me diagnosis but he was very negative and insisted that allergies weren't my problem. He still said that when he called to tell me that I'm allergic to corn, soy and wheat. Um...thanks for your opinion, but no thanks. I eliminated those things and never had joint pain again. So, be aware that your allergist may not agree with this.

So, this time, with chest pain and throat swelling, I went the medical route first; partly because I wanted to rule out and horrible ailments and partly because I didn't want to give up bread either. ; )

I have not missed bread this last week (I'm on day 2 of no throat sensations). I've been eating a ton of fruits and vegitables and it's more satisfying than I'd thought it would be. And, since this diet is only temporary, I'm feeling pretty positive about it. Today, I'm adding in homemade yogurt and will eat a lot of it to try and trigger a 'relapse'. Then I'll give it a few days and introduce in something else, probably eggs.

Anyway, best of luck.
