Hook up wii through VCR?

My TV doesnt have the direct plugin thing, so the VCR is hooked up to the TV through a cable. I hooked up my wii to the VCR/DVD and changed the channel to 3. I then looked throught the VCR channels, but all I can find is something on channel 77. When its hooked up to output, theres a blue screen with a faint image of the wii menu. I always thought it had to be hooked up to input, so I dont know what to do
