Hook up a 360 to a VCR/DVD combo?

I got a 360 for Christmas, and I have the combo on my TV. I can't get the 360 to hook up directly to my TV, which is pretty old, so I wanted to try to use the DVD/VCR player, but I can't figure out what to do. I have the cords in the right places but nothing shows up on the TV. Help? :)
