Hong Kong Legends And Kung Fu Movies

I've really got into Kung Fu movies recently and am enjoying watching the series of programs on BBC4.

What's everyone's fave kung fu movie?

Also, part of the reason I created the thread, but I'm sure it will carry on as I mentioned above, I am buying the Hong Kong LegenRAB fortnightly DVD/Magazine, and I was wondering how many issues there are? I worked out that there are at least 23, and I can't wait until the A Chinese Ghost Story one, and there's also a few I've never heard of which I can't wait to see

I also found this great website

LoaRAB of great value DVRAB

Worth checking out

I like the Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies from Hong Kong. I particlarly like Jackie Chan for his comedy fighting and lots of crazy stunts in movies such as Project A, Young Master, Drunken Master and dozens of others.

Bruce lee is also one of the greatest. I like Fist of Fury, Enter the Dragon and The Big Boss out of all his films. I even like his son Brandon Lee's films such as Rapid Fire and Legacy of Rage. Very dad that both Bruce and Brandon died as they had lots of potential in kung fu movies.

i think bruce lee and jet li are the best.
i feel jackie chan has passed his time.

i like bandon lees films rapid fire and the crow i felt legacy of rage was the worst movie ever.

shannon lee bruce lees daughter who is still a live And Now You're Dead thats her good movie.

you forgot to put way of the dragon and game of death they are both lovly movies . Man The Myth stroey of bruce lee.

in brandon lee you forgot to put Showdown In Little Tokyo
thats one of brandon lees best movie.

Awesome film :)

The Once Upon A Time In China trilogy and the Bruce Lee collection should be a part of any kung fu film fan. When it comes to Jackie Chan, the likes of Snake In The Eagles Shadow, Project A 1&2, Police Story 1&2 are all classics but he did also make some overrated material like Drunken Master and Young Master.

Jonathan Ross had a show on BBC4 last week called Asian Invasion, which featured an interview with Stephen Chow. If you love HK movies, check out Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer - both of these are modern day classics :)

Kung Fu Movies:

Enter the Dragon
Shaolin Master Killer
Kid With The Golden Arms
Lady Wu-Tang
Shaolin Chastity Fu
Drunken Master
The Chinese Connection
The 5 Deadly Venoms
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Street Fighter
Return of the Street Fighter

There are so many more that are my favorite but I think these will do.

That Chow Yun Fat's "The Killer"?

Wouldn't expect much kung fu action in that one if I were you - more slo-mo blood and bullets - still a cracking film, mind. If you like it, check out Chow in "Hard Boiled" for another (even better) slice of John Woo before he went all soft.

It's not just Kung Fu I'm into, and I've got to say of the Asian cinema scene, Hong Kong is one of my faves. I do like Korean and Japanese films like Oldboy, Audition, Ring and Dark Water plus European cinema as well

I'm not expecting much Kung Fu in The Killer, only a damn good film. Funnily enough I recently bought the Collectors Edition of Hard Boiled and I'm currently watching it. I'll watch Oldboy and House Of Flying Daggers next until my other ones come through

Then I also want to see Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, A Better Tomorrow and In The Mood For Love

I'll soon have to re-organise my foreign films into European and Asian, as there are a load of European films I want as well

Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is super, I prefer Sympathy For Lady Vengeance though, excellent trilogy!

Do you know if this will be shown on BBC 1 or 2, because I don't have BBC 4 and I really want to see that series of his. Kung Fu Hustle and Soccer are fabulous.

A film that worth a look is SPL: Sha Po Lang, some excellent fight sequences.

I don't know if this will be shown on BBC1 or 2, I think it might be one of those shows that just stays on BBC4 unless BBC2 do a Asian film season perhaps. The shows were very good, Ross showed genuine enthusiasm for the Asian film industry and some good interviews. The show was aimed more for the person who has just got interested into Asian films or has no idea what is coming out of HK/Japan/Korea. It seems from other forums I go on that hardcore fans were disapointed with the series.

SPL looks awesome and is on my next order to YesAsia!

There is also a website for the magazine
http://www.deagostini.co.uk/hongkonglegenRAB/index.php

It has some frequently asked questions (example below) but not the one I wanted to ask. I don't expect extras or commentries on the magazine dvd's but do they have surround sound which most 'proper' HKL discs do? Anybody know?

What can I expect to see in the first 8 issues for Hong Kong LegenRAB?

Issue 1 - Fist of Fury
Issue 2 - Drunken Master
Issue 3 - Once Upon a Time in China
Issue 4 - The Killer
Issue 5 - Police Story
Issue 6 - Way of the Dragon
Issue 7 - Project A
Issue 8 - Enter the Dragon

at first i thought SPL was going to be another Infernal affairs wannabe thankfully the fights in the third acts and slasher kung fu saved it. quite a great film

I'm just watching Rebel Without A Cause, then I can get round to watching my DVRAB that came today. I'll start with The Killer first as I watched Hard Boiled last night and I feel like watching another John Woo movie
In respect to Hard Boiled, I have the collectors edition, but I saw that there was an uncut version. What's the difference, and what was cut?
I presume the magazine will carry on. They did a questionnaire to check what people wanted and the demand, plus there's normally a bunch of subscribers anyway
