Ive had for a while now a 1999 Honda XR 100R. The previous owner had their uncle rebuild the motor. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. But when i first got the bike i was able to put it in neutral and let it idle. now if i pull in the clutch in any gear and let go of the gas, it just shuts off. I dont know what to do, Im new to mechanics but i want to learn it for future reference.

sounds like a fuel problem, if it was running ok after the rebuild then started that, and does idle, there is a fuel problem, do the easy stuff first, drain the bowel on the carb, there is a little drain bolt, into a small cup and pour it on dry concrete, if you see beads in the puddle you have water in your gas, condensation can even do that. then turn the fuel on with plug out (put your cigarette out) should get a steady stream. smell the gas if it smells like turpentine it's gone bad, if you don't get a steady stream turn fuel off, take the 4 screws out of the bowel and be careful not to tear the gasket, you look at the inside of the bowel and see if there is any trash or rust inside, take the pin out of the float and put the float to the side, a small brass piece will fall out that the bowel holds in, that is a needle valve, just a kind of square sided thing with a point at one end the fuel comes out of the hole the needle valve was in, and the float rises when fuel goes in the bowel and the pointy end closes the the hole by way of a small bendable tab on the float for adjustment turn the fuel on for a sec and see if you get a steady stream of fuel, if you do the needle was probably stuck. put it back together, drain the fuel put new fuel in it, and give it a shot, if you still have problems you can e-mail me and go farther, oh yeah one real easy ck before you do anything, as the bike is idling get some wd-40 and spray it around where the carb connects to the cylinder, if it stumbles then dies immediatly you have an air leak there.
