Honda XL125 1987 Mis-fire/poor running at low revs, poor throttle response?

Hi i have a honda xl125 single cylinder, carb, and its not running too well. At idle it wont stay steady it will hover round the 1500 rpm to 3000rpm mark. Then when i rev it suddenly it will cough and sometimes stall. When i rev it steadily it will climb the revs pretty good. It is ride-able but it is very annoying! ive cleaned the carb with compressed air and checked air leaks.. anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure it is not drawing air somewhere like carb to manifold rubber?Assuming it ran well before, something has happened to affect the fuel/air ratio.
