Honda Prelude 1989 dual carb keeps cutting out?

I have a 89 prelude ba4 dual carb (well i thinks its dual carb because it doesnt look like a typical modern engine), every time i start it the car keeps cutting out and it wont idle, the only way to keep the car running was to adjust the accelerator cable under the bonnet/hood to bring the revs up, im wondering is this something minor, i only just bought the car so i dont know how long it has been like this
