My husband and I are looking into buying an SUV for two reasons...the first is because we live in Connecticut and need something with four wheel drive or AWD and second is because we are trying to start a family and want something safe and reliable to tote our future children around in. Which of these SUV's is the better choice for what we need?

On a side note, we would be getting either one used, probably an 05 or 06 as our max budget is 15k.

Thanks for the input!
Thanks mccoyblues, but Subaru's don't really fit my style and Volvo's are lovely but out of our price range!

The CR-V is top in it's class for reliability. BUt there are a lot of very safe, very reliable AWD cars that would meet your needs as well. Don't think an SUV or a truck are your only choices.

Take a look at the Subaru Forrester and the Volvo V70 for excellent alternatives to these trucks.

I have never even sat in the CRV, but have been told that they are good vehicles. I can vouch for the Escape though.

My wife drives one... '05 XLT V6 AWD. Not a bad ride. It has a somewhat noisy interior, but that may be the aggressive tires on it (still seems slightly loud). The V6 is peppy, but you have to rev it a little to make good power. The AWD works just fine, it doesn't have any sort of electronic stability control or traction control. It handles nicely in the snow. City/hwy combo mileage is above 20 all the time (up to 25mpg). Highway mileage is 23-28mpg.

My wife loves it; I kinda feel like I'm driving a go-kart (I prefer a fullsize truck).

It now has close enough to call it 100K miles. I did have to replace the fuel pump at around 70k, and the carrier bearing needs to be replaced now for the rear drive shaft (under $100). The spark plugs on the V6 are a pain to replace; the intake manifold needs to be removed to access the rear 3. So if your not mechanically inclined, the 100k plug replacement will cost you a few hundred bucks.

Do I recommend it? Sure. If it fits your needs, and you can find a clean one, go for it.

please please buy the honda crv, ford's are unreliable. hondas are super reliable and top any reliability test thrown at them. the crv is a great car, the ford escape..not so much. HONDA CRV. dont listen to any red-neck saying to buy american, why do you think ford, chrysler and gm are going under? shitty cars.
