Honda Civic Type R radiator fan problem...?

iv got a 03 CTR coming to 30k miles, drives superb, vtec is like Gangsta... any ways, i did notice when i was buying it (June, but never questioned it) that the rad fan always started when the ignition is on position II and whilst driving. any idea why?

without looking at the car it would be impossible to say if this was an "owner mod" to keep the fan running all the time to 'fix' another problem (such as overheating from the fan not coming on) or if this is due to some other condition (a shorted fan relay or a shorted radiator fan temp sensor for example)

I would suggest you go to the underhood fuse and relay box and pull the radiator fan relay. the fan should not work with the relay removed. then, find any other relay in the relay box that is the same size and pin configuration. almost all of the honda relays are the same. swap the other relay into the slot for the radiator fan relay and try it again. if the fan doesn't run then the problem is with the relay. This is by far the highest probability of being what is wrong with the car.. if the fan continues to run with the ignition ON after ther relay has been swapped either the fan has a short to power or the temp sensor is shorted.

there is another possibility that I have to ask--are you sure its the radiator fan? I only ask this because if the car has air conditioning on the car and the air conditioning is always left "ON" then the codensor fan will run any time the ignition is turned ON. so if its the condensor fan that is running it may be that it is 'normal' or it may be a problem with the a/c ON switch being shorted.. My guess is that this scenerio is a longshort but need to ask anyway.

I think your just dealing with a bad radiator fan relay.

hope that helps
