Honda Civic transmission?

I have a 1997 LX.

The transmission began slipping when it was hot and the check engine light snapped on at that moment. The scan revealed two transmission codes (don't know what they are yet) and the mechanic, seeing that there were no metal particulates in the fluid, recommended we try replacing the two diodes ($500) to start with. After this procedure, surprise, surprise, it's the tranny after-all.

Did the mechanic's sequence make sense?

1 always find out what the codes mean
2 then ask around to some tranny places or a TRUSTED mechanic

my 4x4 chevy truck would not shift into 4 wd...my mechanic replaced a solonoid and a vacuum switch... total parts 90 dollars ..plus 100 labour...

paying 500 dollars for no repair????? just soooo wrong

Didnt make sense to me, the codes tell you what is wrong... then the mechanic, who is supposed to be ceritifed and knows what he is doing, would troubleshoot and diagnose any other problems. Just replacing parts and then saying, hey lets see what happens is BS and not acceptable.
