Honda Civic Transmission woes...?

The automatic transmission in my ’97 Civic LX started slipping in low gear when it was hot. The first time this happened the check-engine light came on. I took it in and the scan showed:

* PO420 – exhaust convertor (yah, I know, yet another problem)
* PO700 – transmission fault in controller
* PO715 – Input speed sensor fault

Mitch thought the trans fluid looked ok and suggested we change out the tranny’s main pickup assembly and linear solenoid (a $500 job). This did nothing. Now he says it’s time to put in a used tranny ($800). The total for all this is $1,821.35.

Based on those codes, do you believe changing out the assembly and solenoid was the correct first step?

Thank you so much!!
Sean,

Thank you very much for your answer. Dobbs changed out the fluid a few months ago. Would they have known to use the right stuff? The slipping only happens when it is hot and only as I am accelerating out of a stop. Once I get past the first gear things are ok.
I just called Dobbs. The work was done 12/08. They asked 'What kind of car do you have?' I responded 'Does it make a difference?' They said 'Yes, it does.' They are now looking the job up and will call me back. I worry that if a mistake was made, I will never know about it.
With the wrong fluid, would the symptoms have take 9 months to appear?
