Honda Civic as my first car? Worried about mileage?

Ok so I'm thinking about getting a 2000-2002 Honda Civic as my first car. Is this a good choice? I'm going to try and save up around 5+ grand and purchase one during the beginning of summer 2010. So I'd be purchasing this my Sophomore summer. I'm just worried about the miles - I see Honda Civics in the $5000 range from 110,000 to 140,000 miles. I would want this car at least until I graduate, and maybe through some of college. All my friends say to get a car under 70,000 miles (She's planning on getting a Mitsubishi Eclipse). I'm not being competitive, but who's car is going to be better in the long run? (not really important though lol)

So basically, is a Honda Civic 2000 - 2002 model around $5000 with around 110,000 - 140,000 a good deal, and how long should it last me?

Thanks for any answers!

The Civic will outlast the Eclipse by about 100,000 miles mechanically. Eclipses are lemons; the gearbox they chose for it is shoddy and unreliable and the earlier models have a really unreliable All-Wheel-Drive system. If it were my choice I wouldn't have either the Civic or the Eclipse but the Civic can go upwards of 300,000 miles without any major mechanical problems if they're treated right. Tell your friend who's getting the Eclipse that they're making a big mistake and to research into it a little more.

ok coming from a guy that works on cars all day. i see honda civics with 275k + miles on them come in all the time. there built really well. depending on where you are 5k seems a little much for me. down here in ks they go for like 3k. also it depends on how you take care of it. if you do your oil changes and the your maintenance on time. it will last you 3 years out of collage.

mileage is not a problem.if over all condition is good then you should go for it.you should also make sure that it is accident free.check the chases.the petrol average is also important.don't buy this car if u r a poor man. may be cost of petrol is not afford able for you.yy if so, then you should buy toyota yaris.

I think it comes down more to which car has been maintained more properly. Honda Civic can last very long if it has been taken care of.
