I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid and its check engine light is always turning on and off. I have taken it to the dealership and they told me that the computer is giving false positives and while not a terrible problem, it would be expensive to fix. I decided not to.
Fast forward to me needing to get my tags. In the county I live in I need an emissions test to submit for my tags. Their website says
"1996 and newer vehicles with on-board diagnostic (OBD) equipment will not pass emissions testing if the check engine light is on. It is advisable to have the vehicle tested to determine the reason for the light being illuminated. Repair costs prior to initial failure will not be considered when applying for a waiver."
My engine light is off now, but it turns on for no apparent reason randomly.
Will they fail my emissions test because of this or will I be fine because I am 99% sure that nothing is wrong with the car, just glitches in the computer?
