Honda Civic 2000 - check engine light always on?

I bought a Honda Civic 2000 in June. Prior to buying it, I had read that it was a good car but that there was a faulty "check engine" light always being on.

I wanted to know if this problem was ever resolved and if so, what is the course of action?

When we get the oil changed, we get them to do an engine check so, everything is working fine.
