three things,
1. what are the differences between the two
2. Which would you reccomend (for a first car)
3. what year/model would you reccomend (for a first car)

Great answer from Steven. Basic, short answer about the difference is size. Civic is smaller, more fuel-efficient than the larger, family-oriented Accord.

I drive a 2005 Civic Hybrid with manual transmission. While it looks boring (and the body is plain and run-of-the-mill silver), I love it. I average 45 miles to the gallon, both city and highway. It is very comparable to the highly-touted, but much more expensive Prius, by the way.

I would definitely recommend you get a Civic. I think that you will find it cheaper anyway than an Accord. Your first car should be a coupe (2-door, unless you buy the hybrid which only comes in sedan), and I personally think a stick.

The model year is not as important as mileage, number of previous owners and maintenance history. Well-maintained Hondas will last forever and ever and ever. I suggest you search private party listings and try to avoid the car dealers.

The Civic is a smaller economy car that can be loaded to act like a baby Accord.

The Accord is more like a family car.

I owned a 1993 Civic until I traded it in 2008. The car was the best car i ever owned! I miss it! It was a basic 5 speed that got 42 city/46 highway.

Now I have 1999 Accord I bought from my dad. I am lucky to get 32 mpg at best.

I would 100% recommend any new Civic to any driver, especailly new ones with little money. Theyre reliable and fuel efficent.

I would recommend the newest model possible you can afford.

Don't know too much about the Accords (how they handle and such) but I own a '95 Civic and like another poster says, it is an extremely reliable car. Over 161,000 miles and no major repairs. It handles sufficently, is easy on gas, is easy enough to do repairs on, and there's still many parts available (including junkyards). I'll keep the car as long as I possibly can. One thing to also mention is that the car is a bit small, for it was designed that way, but you're not going to be moving full size-sofas or NFL Linebackers in it. Good luck.
