Honda Accord Door Won't Shut?

Wife's 1997 Honda Accord drivers door won't shut. The mechanical latching mechanism is operating just not sure if its operating properly. When the door is push shut it remains slightly open which prevents the door from being locked. I can't find anyone with a similar problem on the net. I do have a manual and like to fix things but just need to know where to start. Thanks.
