Its hard to say without actually hearing the noise and witnessing the problem. However I would check your CV axles. They are the shafts that go from the transmission to the wheel and if it somehow pulls out from the transmission (very rare) the car will not move and can make a grinding sound. Have a repair shop examine it for you. Alot of diagnostic fees are cheap and it will give you a better idea of how much it will cost to fix.

I pulled up to my daughter's work and as I slowed down the car started to make a rattle sound. I turned the engine off. Turned it back on but when I put it in either Reverse or Drive, it wouldn't move. Tried to shift to Park, and was met with a loud noise (like trying to change gear in manual drive without pressing clutch). Friend suggested lack of transmission fluid. What do you think.
