Home Remedies for Bad Muscle Spasm/ Tightness

I will be having a 2 level lurabar fusion coming up, my second fusion in less than a year. I am having a lot of problems with muscle tightness and pain in my entire back that goes into my neck and causes headaches. My surgeon will not allow me to take muscle relaxers like flexiril or anything.

I am trying massage, heat, stretches/ exercises, hot showers/ baths, ibuprofen, and nothing is bringing any notable relief. Hot showers bring short term relief, but I can't stay in the shower all day!

Does anyone have another idea I can try?

Hey Megss...I also had back surgery and will be having another lower back fusion hopefully within 3 weeks. I bought an electric heating pad that you can velcro around your waist. Gets pretty hot and helps temporarily. As a matter of fact Im going to put it on right now while I am on my laptop! Good Luck.

Joe.

I use some "freeze" spray occasionally and the "icy patches" (this type of product is available at any large pharmacy chain).. This should not be corabined with the use of a heating pad but I find it useful at night when I don't want to fall asleep with a heating pad on. During the day I use my heating pad a lot so I went out and bought one that has an automatic shut off (kept being worried I'd forget I left it on since it's on so often). Whenever I have to travel or be away from home I always have one of those instant heating disposable thermal heat paRAB.

Thanks for your replies. I have used the creams and stuff, and for some reason I can't stand the burning feeling I get from them. A heating pad is a great idea, however I cannot find mine for the life of me. I think it accidentally got packed up when we were putting our house on the market. I guess it is time to buy a new one!

Megss:

Get one of the heating paRAB that shuts off automatically. They cost a little more than standard ones but are worth it (especially, if like me, you use it so often you then can't remeraber is you shut it off)
