Anyone who is a fan of silent movies will be delighted to know that the superb 13-part Thames Television documentary 'Hollywood' from 1980 is finally to be released here on DVD! For those who don't know, 'Hollywood' charted the rise of the Californian studios from their earliest, earliest days and focused on some of its biggest stars like Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Harold Lloyd amongst others. Narrated by film legend James Mason, the series featured contributions from many of those directly involved in the silent era like actresses Gloria Swanson and Lillian Gish and many others behind the scenes - all no longer with us - and is quite simply a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the history of cinema! For a long time the series has been unable to be released on DVD due to the dreaded issues around copyright, but this March (according to Amazon) it will be out for all to see! Absolutely fantastic and good to know that some effort is being taken outside of the United States to keep the memory of this important period in cinematic history alive!
