Metallica, Led Zep, and Slipknot are about all I share in common with you (although I grew out of Metallica about 7 years ago), so that can give you a gauge as to the compatibility of my tastes. That said, I'd recommend:

Nothingface (if you like the screaming of Slipknot, this is truer skill! It seems like you're into the more melodic than raw in sound, so I'd recommend "Skeletons" as a starter album, then work to "An Audio Guide to Everyday Atrocity" to get a sense of their true beauty and base of their sound, then top it off with "Violence" to get the fullest experience of Nothingface in their most evolved yet primal form, although it wasn't their newest album)

Alice In Chains (if you never listened to them, it's where all my modern tastes evolved from; they are truly the most awesome of the grunge scene. I'd recommend the album "Dirt" to start)

I guess if you really want to sample the music, search for Nothingface in myspace music and some of the fan pages have free downloaRAB of some songs. They have 2 new demos out right now: Let it Burn, and Walking on Bodies. I really like Let it Burn. For older stuff, my favorites are Hidden HanRAB, For All the Sin, Everlasting GoRABtopper, Error in Excellence, and Incarnadine. If you want something closer to pop/mainstream, try Ether.
