Comprehensively explain "Puritanism" in terms of the dilemma of trying to pursue high religious ideals while somehow remaining practically effective and economically viable in a wilderness environment. Emphasize how the puritans believed that their "errand into the wilderness" would enable them to build the idealistic "City on the Hill" as espoused by Winthrop. Be certain to fully explain the puritan concept of the "community's covenant relationship with God" as the essential purpose of government and how this lead to a religiously intense, unified, conformist society.
