History question; inter coastal waterway!?

I lived by a river that was called the inter coastal waterway. All my childhood life I thought it was always there. Southeast Florida. Now, years later, I found out it was dug by the Army Corps of Engineers. Which created the islands such as Palm Beach, Jupiter Island, etc.
Question is; when they were digging, were there buildings, houses, etc. "in the way" that got torn down?
