I am perplexed..as to why the the south american indegious groups !Perfered or had no idea that you can make steel or even copper swords like the western world had...but either perfered the Obsidian blades ..or where oblivious to metalurgy as to making swords from ore,s..i dont think they didnt have the knowledge to understand metalurgical concepts..as they worked with gold and silver..so why OBISIDIAN swords? The only thing i can think off is that obisidian cut's qiet deep when you diliver the blow the right way enough to do mortal damage..another concept behind the obisidian sword is that they where easy to shape with a razor;s edge and also they where such that they literally slid in to the dug out cavity of the sword when one blade was damaged each could be replaced with a new blade. i can imagine they would even carry with them extra blades in war.But personally i think obsidian was plentyifull and was also a every day tool ...not just a killing implement...what do you think?
