His Dark Materials - "The Golden Compass"

I know it's a little early but having just watched the trailer I am really looking forward to seeing this film even if the makers have done their best to remove all references to religion from the series. I loved the books when I read them and even though I would not have cast Daniel Craig in the part of Lord Asriel and never even thought of Nicole Kidman as the hateful Mrs Coulter I find myself thinking that maybe the casting directors have got it right especially with La Kidman and her glacial appearance. Roll on December and I hope it doesn't disappoint!

Not liking Kidman in this one bit, personally I don't like her as an actress. I hope that I am proved wrong as I think this could make a great film, but perhaps feel fans of Pullman's work will be disappointed.

Thank you! The film has been recognised! I agree that daniel craig was not what i had imagined but nicole kidman as mrs coulter is a seemingly match made in heaven. I have just finished reading the book and i have seen the extra behind the scenes footage of the film and the teaser trailer and it does look interesting.

Being the animator by trade,

iyorek is not finished. Well I hope not! The bear do need more work.

But I am surprised lyorek being more of a polar bear than say grizzly bear. Why did I presume that I don't know. I better reread the book again. Also, the armour look too neat, I thought it would be rusty scrapheap like pieces being welded together, Heavy Iron rather than detailed craved armours. Or is it a different bear I watch?

The girl Lyra is older in the film than in the book? I can't wait to see Pantalaiman or other daemons.

Daniel Craig, hmm.. in the book he was a bit far distance, cultured and a bit of a bastard. Who can play at that better than Daniel? I think his beard pull it off.

I think Eva Green is perfectly casted as the witch.

Are they being filmed back to back like the Lord of the Rings or one at a timel like Harry Potter? Lyra will grow too quickly at the end of the series!

Can't wait.

he's a polar bear in the book - they live in the snow!!

they've hired a writer for the second film but no decision has been mae on whether to make it or not, and i doubt a decision will be made until the first weekend TGC opens

This does look good, although I dread the sequels. Philip Pullman lost it big time with The Amber Spyglass. If they get that far they'll have to do some serious rewriting just to make it into something coherent.

If anyone hasn't read Northern Lights I HIGHLY recommend it. On it's own it should be considered as one of the all-time great fantasy books.

agree on the final book, i didnt even read the final 100 pages so i dont know how its resolved, although my sister filled me in a little.
For me to spend hour & hours reading 3 books and then give up 100 pages from the end, says alot...

They what? :(
I didn't know that. I was really looking forward to these films as I loved the books. Finally a book that introduces challenging ideas about religion to children in a way that encourages debate and epansive thought. Now all it will encourage is lunchbox and action figure sales. Shame on Philip Pullman! And after all he said about C S Lewis too!

They haven't cut all the religious stuff. The trailer even proves it when that guy says 'that is heresy!'. It seems they're just going to simplify it, and also use ideas that Pullman only brought in later on in the series. My guess is that Asriel is going to present Dust as the source of creation or something and it's gonna rile up the college masters.

WOW! It's almost 5 months since I started this thread and the film is now on the horizon..........watching the new trailer I'm struck by the casting of La Kidman more than anyone and really do think she is perfect for the part.........still not sold on Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel.....he looks too young and a lot slimmer than I had always imagined the character in the books to be plus where is the beard?
I know the film won't be on a par with the book given the changes that they have made and I expect it to be tame in relation to the violence suggested on the written page but if I watch it with those considerations in mind I've a feeling it may be an enjoyable romp!
