Hindsight being 20/20, what is your impression of the S&L and Chrysler bailouts?

These are the two bailouts I could think of off the top of my head.

Were they successful? Did we taxpayers get screwed? Good for the market? For the economy? For American security?

Have previous bailouts been successful?

"The economy" is a meaningless social construction. There is no economy, just a collection of individuals. There is no such thing as something "good for the economy" because there are too many groups involved and some benefit, others do not.

Regarding your question, bailouts are immoral. Period. They are nothing else but socialization of losses while profits are kept private. I'm sure there are many practices "good" for the economy such as slavery or forced euthanasia at 65 years old but they are still immoral. Bailouts are good for the people getting them and bad for the rest. Whether or not you make an average and claim that the benefits outweight the cons is meaningless. No one should pay for someone else's failure.

Yeah, forced euthanasia... Think how much we could save in healthcare!
