Hiking the John Muir Trail on October?

I have been planning on hiking the John Muir Trail, but I feel that I'm too late for this season.
As I understand, the best time of the year to hike the J M Trail is between August and Sep, but I really want to go this year.
What would be the disadvantage if going this month?....October.
