Clothes, raingear, steel wool, camp stove, food, knife, cooking pans, water purification tablets, maps, food, sleeping bag, large plastic sacks for rain shelter, rope (100 ' of 3/16 nylon), 3 partners, ground pad, 2 way radio, 10 mile range, not a cell phone. Flare gun, for rescue, tear gas for bears, and panthers, towel, TP, trenching tool to dig a sanitary pit, cup, to drink from, signal mirror, soap, candles, 1" dia, matches, lighter, 1st aid kit, knowledge of the area, 2 days food for every day of the trip. Pencil and writing paper to leave a message if you leave a camp, for when you expect to return. Leave a message when you depart so somone can send a rescue party after you if you do not return on time. A whistle, to get attention, easier than yelling and it will carry further. This should all fit on 2 pack mules, oops you are back packing, a single tent. This is just a rough suggestion, include spare dry socks, and a change of clothes if the trip is more than 2 days. Clothes pins, spare "D" cells for the flashlight, they also will start a fire with the steel wool or SOS pad.. Do a google search on survival kits.

Where I live ( Southern California ) the first things that go in to my day-pack are
1. Water ( 1gal.. per person per six hours )
2. Sunscreen and for after dark , bug repellent
3. Toilet Paper
4. First aid kit , at Walmart the $10 one is fine for day hikes
I would add aspirin ( pain reliever ) if not included.
5. Pocket knife
6. Matches
7. Pen and paper , to leave a note with your car or camp
detailing where you're going and when you'll be back
8. Whistle and mirror
9. It seems obvious , and you will want some snacks that travel well
I like jerky , nuts , dried fruits and fresh oranges
