One of my knees is permanently injured, which causes my ankle and foot to swell most of the time. Usually, the bad leg's foot and ankle are just a little swollen, but on bad days, can get so swollen that the bottom of my foot rocks like a wooden horse toy. On those days, I can only wear adjustable clogs, letting out the straps on the bad side as far as possible.

Are there any hiking boots, or shoes, that can accommodate this kind of swelling? Of course I'm not planning on doing any major hikes, but would enjoy being able to do 1-3 hour hikes on good days. I'm planning on bringing my cane for extra support.

A chronic case of swelling may be different but if you sprain your ankle you`re not supposed to take the boot off because then it can swell so much that you wont be able to get the boot back on. A tight boot that is high for a lot of ankle support should keep the swelling down. I would go with a boot that gives you excellent ankle support and then lace them up tight so your foot or ankle doesn't have a chance to swell. When you are done hiking don't take your boots off until you get home, you may not be able to get them back on. But a tightly laced boot with good ankle support should allow you to complete a day hike with no problem. It`s when you have a loose fitting shoe on that your feet will swell the most because there is no compression or stability to stop it from happening.

Do you have a knee brace? I`m sure you do but if not i`d go to a pharmacy and pick one up.
