Not to sound like an a**hole, but I honestly think people who aspire to be nurses should also be required to take higher math (calculus I minimum), physics, organic chemistry I & II, and biochemistry. Despite some "unnecessary courses" as most people would argue, nurses should have strong knowledge in the field of science and math. In addition, nursing schools should act in the same way as medical schools in regards to having a test that is similar to the MCAT and interviews (a lot of people would still try anyways due to such an appealing major.) That way, the lazy, and the people who want to pursue nursing for the "money" are weeded out from the more dedicated, determined, passionate people who really want to be a nurse (RN especially). I feel that nurses (especially RN's) should have higher standards. Seriously, people need to start using their heads, not merely just remembering some biology terms. Physics and math is still important to humanity, yet people who want to become nurses only want to be nurses since they do not have to take physics and higher levels of mathematics. Looking at people around me, especially in school, a lot, I mean A LOT of people want to become nurses for the wrong reasons. For example, my psychology teacher asked us what are majors were, and more than 2/3 wanted to pursue nursing because the major is supposed to be "lightly difficult", gives high salary, including benefits of making even more money! I was so astounded for this also occurred in all of my science courses. When has nursing truly been a "dream" career for the passionate who really want to help patients. This one time, I went up to a person who wanted to major in nursing and I asked why...he said because it makes a lot of money...ugh... I may sound ignorant, but please don't totally disregard of what I just said.....Keep in mind that I know some people want to enter nursing because they are passionate about helping people...
