High Prolactin Levels!!!

Hello,
My daughter(28 years) has been told she has high prolactin levels. She has been experiencing severe head pressure for the last 3 months, and will not be able to get a CT scan for another month. Wondering if there is anyone out there who has had these symptoms...I am worried she may have a growth in her pituitary gland. She also has not had her period in about 6 months.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has been diagnosed with this condition, and what you are doing about it. Thank you! Cheralyn
 
I was diagnosed hypothyroid back in Jan '07. I'm still having symptoms despite excellent thyroid levels. I have headaches and I've started having trouble with my vision. I'm going in on Monday for some follow up blood tests including a redo of my prolactin levels, it was around 50 in Jan, that's above normal but not super high. If my next test is elevated I'll be going in for an MRI pronto. I assume my endocrinologist is looking for the same thing your daughter's doctors are - pituitary adenoma or aka just "prolactinoma". (almost all are benign)

Why the long wait for an MRI? I know from what I've read that most prolactinomas are small and can be treated sucessfully with a medication called Bromocriptine.
 
have you tried vitex?

does prolactin cause you any discomfort in your chest?

can you tell when you prolactin levels are high?

also when you thyroid levels improve, do you feel you prolactin levels improve?
 
I too have had blood tests for this nd my prolactin is high. I have breast milk coming out and have never been pregnant. I was told it was antisick medication that I was taking but I havent taken any for over two months and still have it. It is possible to have the pituitary tumour,my sister has and shes had scans. Even after her scans the doctors have left it. She has utereine fibroids too and has only had tablets for the bleeding. I will have to go back to the doctors with it. Does anyone know if it can upset the stomach? Theres suposed to be medications for it but Ihavent been offered any. I was told it would go but its taking its time like my stomach problem. Lets hope there are more posts on this.
 
Hi Cheralyn.....you live in a beautiful part of the world. My brother is in Kelowna and I am so envious. But getting testing done is slow....I know that from his experiences.

I developed a prolactinoma after the birth of my second child. Stopped nursing him and within a few months, had more milk that when I was nursing.

Prolactinomas are inside the pituitary and can be a small as 10 cells but they pump out prolactin when you don't need it. If they get big enough to see, they can be removed but they can be counter-acted with bromocriptine as AuntieLeela said. And there are some new drugs for treating it too. In my case, it disappeared about 3 years after it appeared and just as mysteriously. Endocrinologist figures I may have had a tiny blood clot get in there and block up the blood vessels and kill the tumor.

It is very treatable....and more common that you'd think.
