High Gauge Reading on AC Car Kit?

I was going to fill the refridgerent/freon in my car and after I hooked the gauge up to the low pressure port the gauge read in the "warning" level at a little above 100 psi. My car dash says the freon is low and the air is luke warm. The compressor is off because of the low level of freon, could the reading not be accurate if the compressor isn't on? To clear up any confusion I am a competent person and you don't have to answer my question with questions like "Is the Car on?" or "Is it hooked up right?" , thanks.
