i have an older 3-year-old sony 50" lcd-rp that can do 480p/i, 720p, 1080i. the screens physical resolution is 1366x768.

i have an xbox360 (w/ hddvd) and just got a ps3 today. what resolution should i set these two systems to? i figured 720p would be better since it almost matches the screen's physical resolution and it would be progressive. but 1080i obviously is good too because it's 50% more lines... what i don't understand is how does the tv display 1080i info when there's physically only 768 lines...

hddvd and blu-ray movies are in 1080p. what exactly goes on behind the scenes when you watch these movies in 720p or 1080i?

is there a way to configure the xbox360 and ps3 to automatically do that? or do i need to constantly switch back and forth between the two resolutions?

If your TV resolution is 1366x768 then the max resolution you can support is 768p.

1080i will just be downconverted to display as 768p. TVs will say they support 1080i which is true, but it doesnt mean it will be displayed as 1080i.

720p will be better, but blu-ray movies don't display in that resolution so switch your PS3 to 1080i to watch them. There's no way to set movies to 1080i and games to 720p unfortunately, you have to keep changing your maximum output resolution
