...disc-DVD ROM dead? Since DVD ROM is dead , I am unable to boot using the OS Disc What options do I have. I have my friends laptop, can I boot my laptop using his through ethernet, any suggestions welcome. Help

ohh shit, your SOL buddy, you need the NTLDR to boot from the bios, take the HDD out putt it in another computer and install the os that way, the put it back in your computer and get on the interwebs and get your drivers

First, it sounds like the hard disk is dented. It can be recognized by the system so it's still alive but the OS image is corrupted. Yes, you'll need to boot from something to repair the boot sector (Master boot record) and replace the NT loader. This can be done from a floppy but you'll need the DVD drive to work eventually to rebuilt the OS. Get the DVD drive fixed or try to use a USB-sourced drive. Putting the hard drive in another system might work, but perhaps the DVD drive is being pulled down by the hard drive failure.

I had that problem. First of all, you can't use your friend's comp to fix yours. Second of all, you need to use like window installation cd to recopy the NTLDR onto your computer. (find it out how to do it on internet. it's there. I don't wanna explain sorry... too long) If this doesn't fix problem, you reformat. but probably if the previous step didn't work, reformatting wouldn't help. Then ultimate soluation is, just get a new hdd

This issue has been known to be caused by a loose or fault IDE/EIDE cable. If the above recommendation does not resolve your issue and your computer hard disk drive is using an IDE or EIDE interface. Verify the computer hard disk drive cable is firmly connected by disconnected and reconnecting the cable.

If the issue continues it is also a possibility that the computer has a faulty cable, try replacing the hard disk drive cable with another cable and/or a new cable.

Hope you can find a friend who has made a bootable USB stick drive with DOS and utilities loaded. NTFSDOS on there might be able to copy some of your most critical files.

If you have to reload, consider buying a new hard drive first.

Make the new hard drive your master, the old drive a slave, reload everything on your new master, and then recover files that you can from the slave. With a laptop, you may need to get an IDE to USB adapter, so that you can plug your slave drive in a USB port to get the data off of it. (as most laptops don't have room for 2 hard drives)
