the bright star/object is fairly low in the west/south west sky is, we see it every evening and was just interested. as you probably guessed I know nothing about astronomy.
 
That is the planet Venus. I live in Portland, Oregon, (which is basically very 'close' to the same place on the planet as Machester UK), and that is where Venus is found in our night sky in the 'early evening.'
 
i think you may be talking about mars at this time of year the northern hmisphere is closest to mars, although i may be wrong.
