Hernia surgery?

I just found out that I have two hernias in the groin area and will be getting surgery in the near future. Luckily they do not pose an immediate threat, but of course my surgeon recommends that I get them taken care of soon to prevent them from getting worse.

Have any of you had hernia surgery? Can you tell me a little bit what it's like and how the recovery is?

I have been reading about the surgery and my surgeon gave me an information booklet all about it. She said it's typically about 2 weeks for recovery time. If possible, they are NOT going to use the mesh method for repairing the hernia because she informed me that in females, this can often cause discomfort later on in life with bulging in the area and discomfort during sex, and it would be for the rest of my life.

good luck with your surgery. I had a male friend get that surgery years ago.. 2 weeks sounds about right. I don't know if it's worse in males due to their anatomy, I just remember him being uncomfortable sitting for about a week or so. He didn't mention having a whole lot of pain afterwards though.

Thanks for your reply! I appreciate that. Yes, I have also heard that it's often a little more difficult for males, as the hernias are usually a little larger due to their anatomy. I am hoping I feel okay after a week to go back to work, and two weeks for more physical activity. I'll definitely rest a lot and take my pain pills so I can be back to normal ASAP! I've heard some people say it was very painful afterwards and others say it wasn't that bad because they just slept it off a good amount.

Good Luck with your hernia surgery. I am a 40-year old male and had hernia surgery in 1996 on my right side and everything went perfect!!! I still have no problems to this day and I am an avid weightlifter (gym rat). HOWEVER...I also had a second hernia surgery 9 months ago on my left side. I am sitting here still in pain and very frustrated because my surgeon wont acknowledge that something is wrong. I did have the mesh for both of my surgeries. I went to the "best" as they say, hernia surgeon here in Florida and I am so sorry that I used him. He did the surgery laporascopically. My first surgery was the old fashioned way, a 5 inch incision with a lot of recovery pain. BUT it worked. I wish I had never tried this laporascopic surgery. I wish you good luck and a quick recovery!!!

Cowpin8, thank you for your reply! I am sorry to hear that you had to get surgery again and have some pain and I hope you feel better soon. I am sure that is very frustrating.

Was your hernia large in size? I can not say I am exactly sure how large mine is since it's hard to tell with skin and other tissue over it, but I'd say each one is oval shaped (kind of like an egg), only smaller than an egg, maybe about quarter-sized, although oval shaped.

Also, do you have any tips or recommendations for my recovery? Anything I should avoid other than the obvious? I plan on resting a lot and catching up on my sleep and won't attempt exercising until I feel comfortable. When I start exercising, I'll start with regular walking and build my way back up to running. I usually don't lift very heavy weights and can do fine with light weights, so I'll definitely stick with using only body weight or light weights afterwards for a while.
