Archbishop Myers
and Catholic Church
Regarding "Archbishop urges voters to defend marriage, life" (Page A-1, Sept. 25):
I'm 60 and I've been a Catholic all my life. I went to Catholic schools through the ninth grade. My wife and I were married in a Catholic church, raised our children as Catholics and sent them to Catholic schools.
Archbishop John J. Myers states that gay marriage is a threat to the institution of marriage. Coming from a man who has never been married, I believe his remarks are ridiculous. There are many more significant threats to marriage: substance abuse, unemployment and poverty.
Perhaps the archbishop should visit Occupy Wall Street and work for economic justice instead of bashing gays and lesbians. A retired Episcopal bishop by the name of George Packard did so and even got arrested standing up for the people rather than the plutocrats. I'm sure Jesus would have done as Episcopal Bishop Packard.
Myers equates homosexuality with incest. Myers spreads hate toward people who are the way they are not by choice but rather because of their genetics. This man should know better. Gay people are also children of God, and to direct hatred toward them goes against the spirit of Jesus Christ.
By saying that any Catholic who doesn't agree with him should refrain from accepting Communion, Myers has crossed the line: He is trying to force Catholics into embracing a particular political party during an election year.
I believe that people like Myers are responsible for transforming the Catholic Church from the body of Christ into an instrument of hate.
