It sounds like he is a very well looked after pet maybe a tiny bit spoiled because you love him,ok, he's testing you if he whines how or what will it get from you mine does that he too is 1 year and a Labby x Staffy and when I'm not constantly answering to his whines he continues I've been advised to ignore it because you are the Alpha Male and he's got to learn he won't be rewarded by you jumping to him every time he whines...like babies in a way, cry for attention when put down in their cots to get M or D in the room to be picked up try the desensitising thing of gradually increasing the time in between you going to him when he whines and gradually getting longer persist it will yes be annoying but it's all in the learning as a pup.
