help with x ray findings

transitional L5. spina bifida occulta of L5. transverse process of L5 may have pseudoarticulation with the SI joint. slight retrolisthesis of L4 on L5.


17 yr old son (athletic) has been having back pain( on and off 1yr) and headaches(1 month)

been to the dr and choiropractor several times. now being referred to a specialist.

hes having a hard time mentally and physically as he was one of the top runners in this area before the last 2 months or so.

is anyone familiar with these things. should we be very worried. will this bother him for the rest of his life?

any help will be appreciated
 
Hi, I too had a transitional vertebrae and actually this is common. I too was diagnosed at age 17 and ended up needing a fusion. What happens with this is that the two vertebrae are laying on top of one another with no disc in between them so that when you run/move the bones actually rub on bone on bone and sometimes splinter so to speak causing bone to float around in the spinal column.

Some individuals require a fusion and others do not. My biggest advice is to make sure you see a spinal surgeon (works exclusively on spines) as one of your opinions. Do not go with the first dr you see if you do indeed need to move forward with surgery.

I agree - he neeRAB a consultation with an orthopedic spine surgeon (one who does only spine work). There are a variety of treatments available and a good orthopedic spine surgeon can address all the possibilities.
