Fred Hoyle proposed and promoted the Steady State theory.

He also named the Big Bang theory - as a way of mocking it.

Georges Lemaître proposed what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe. However, it rests on work done by Edwin Hubble. He discovered that distant galaxies are moving away from us (which you can tell with spectroscopy). And the farther away they are, the faster they move away from us.
