I have to write an essay on the Bell Jar, deciding whether or not Esther Greenwood's struggles come along as a result of an inward or outward conflict. I'm having a hard time figuring out which one I can back up more with textual evidence. Any ideas?

They're both evident throughout the plot, as you gradually see Esther madness developing as how she views everyday aspects. Also you also see how others react around her. However her problems are enhanced by the company she keeps (forgive me i haven't read the book in a while so the names escape me), the other women in the institute and out of it. It follows a tradition amongst women writers, showing the struggle of a woman writer, in which the writing is blamed for enhancing their problems (i.e. The Yellow Wallpaper and Affinity)
