HELP with Systems of Equations; Elimination..?..?

I understood Substitution for the most part. I think it is way easier.
But now we're doing Elimination, and I'm lost.
I don't know when to use addition.. or multiplication. All of that.
And once I think I have the answer, it's only ends up working for one equation.. not the other.
This is making me so frusterated! Please helppp.
Here is an example;

"Determine the best method to solve each system of equations. Then solve. (Substitution, Elimination using addition, or Elimination using Multiplication)

x-y=2
5x+3y=18

y=3x
3x+4y=30

9x-8y=42
4x+8y=-16

...what do I use? And why? Step by step please! THANK YOU soo much.
