1. A "swing" ride at a carnival consists of chairs that are swung in a circle by 12.0-m cables attached to a vertical rotating pole. The angle of the cable to the vertical pole is (θ = 57.5°). Suppose the total mass of a chair and its occupant is 210 kg.


(a) Determine the tension in the cable attached to the chair in Newtons.

(b) Find the speed of the chairin meters per second.


2. A 0.20 kg ball on a string is whirled on a vertical circle at a constant speed. When the ball is at the three o'clock position, the tension is 17 N. Find the tensions in the string when the ball is at the twelve o'clock and at the six o'clock positions.
