Help with PDA plan info

I am new to this forum but am active on other forums. I have done some searching on PDA plans and have gotten several different answers to my questons. My two main questions are:

1. Do PDA phones specifically the treo have to have data packages on verizon service plans?

2. Can PDA phones be used in combination with family plans?

My wife has been told repeatedly by verizon customer service that since she has a treo she HAS TO have a data plan with the treo. I found several places where I got conflicting answers that I do not need a data plan with a PDA phone or that I at least need a pay as I go so Im confused which is correct. Also, I even searched on verizons website and got no definite answer but my wife and I would like to switch to a family plan but I cannot find anything on verizons website specifically talking about PDA's on family plans, all their PDA plans are listed seperate. Can anyone help me figure out all of this? Thanks!

Anwser to question #1. PDA's do not require a data plan. It is highly recommended if you do use the internet to have a data plan, but you can do a pay as you go rate of $.015 per kb of usage or block it completely. IF you block data access totally than you will lose the ability to send picture and video messages.

Answer to question #2. Yes PDA's can be used with family plans, you can choose to have a data plan or not as explained below. You just will not be able to take advantage of the PDA voice + email discount pricing if you were a signle line phone.((when you have a voice +email plan it saves you about a little bit of money. These are only for singel standalone plans.))
