help with my military pen pal letter?

I im going to be a pen pal for a soldier overseas and im getting ready to write my first letter but I'm having a hard time trying to think of what to write. This isn't someone I know, so I can't write about familiar subjects because I don't know what they are. What sort of things can I talk to this
