Help with my dedicated flash.?

And by advice, I mean how to use the flash properly. Not how to take a photo :)
I got myself a Nikon SB-600 dedicated flash. I read the instructions and I have no clue how to use it. Anyone have some advice for a novice photographer?
 
I am not familiar with this particular flash but most dedicated flash units will accept instructions from the camera. If you set your camera to programmed or automatic, fit the flash and switch it on, the flash will tell your camera that it is ready and exposure should be calculated automatically.

The camera will be taking an exposure reading during exposure and shut off the flash when it has determined exposure is complete.
