i locked 2 bikes together on the back tires. one is locked on the back, and the other on the front. when i tried to open the lock (which is a U bar), the key would not turn the whole way. i took the key out and tried again, but the same thing happened, then the top part of my key broke off. that piece of key is now stuck inside the lock. i am left with half a broken key. i also have the spare key, but it is no use because the piece of key is still stuck in the lock. is there any solution to this problem besides breaking the U bar? btw i detached the bike tire that is in the front.

Yes there is a way, but only if part of the key is still sticking up or if no part of the key is still above the lock then can you fit a small flat blade screw driver down into the lock? If part of the broken key is still above the key slot then take a pair of pliers and GENTLY try turning the key in the lock, since the ridges and grooves of the key are still aligning the pins in the lock it might work. If no part of the key is visible then I would try finding a suitable screw driver and sticking the end in the lock and again GENTLY trying to turn the lock.

If all else fails, call a locksmith.

Oh and yeah, next time you decide to use this type lock outside, try keeping it lubed with graphite.
