Help with laptop and headset/mic problem?

I bought a pc to pc headset/mic to use on skype and yahoo. when I plug in my headset I can hear the person. But my mic isn't working. I've tried 3 sets soit must be my laptop. I think the mic on my cam or laptop is picking up instead- how do I fix this??

go to sounds in control panel and see which mic is the default

right click the speaker icon on the taskbar > recording device > select your webcam usb > click default
