Help with ipod touch 4g jailbreak?

I've been thinking about jailbreaking my new ipod touch 4g but im not really sure on what it does. I want to jailbreak it so that i can get free apps instead of paying for them on the itunes app store but i've heard that all jailbreaking it does is give you free access to apps not allowed on the app store. Please, someone that is experienced, help me out!!
Tell me if i can get ANY app or just apps not on the app store.
