Edward Robert Hughes- his works are very ethereal often using women as allegories. I wasn’t familiar with Victoria Frances, but see now there is a common element of fantasy that can be related to Hughes and well as romanticized costumes and settings.
how about a self portrait of yourself in costume? Both artists use the figure in their work. You could use PS to manipulate the image-- but do not be tempted to use the painterly or pastel filters heavily as the results may be too close in style to your influencing artists.
Perhaps do a series of self portraits that work as one piece. The choice of location and objects present would add to the identity aspect of the portraits. Identity is a complex thing. How we see ourselves, how others see us, and then how we truly are (which is usually a mix of the previous two).Mount portraits as a triptych that opens out with hinges.
Take two portraits mounted back that can be flipped to represent your inner self and that which you present to others.
Another thought- use images of self and small objects inside a box for a 3-d project. Identity is personal and contained within- a hinged box could convey this. Possible images may be color copies of your student id, SS Card or passport(with numbers marked out or painted over to avoid identity theft) or library card... How your government identifies you. Create in layers inside the box with romantic background and making sure there is a figure or face to relate back to Fraces and Hughes.
Yet another idea that can combine 2-d with 3-d-- Working paper dolls of yourself. Changing costume helps many people play with their identity. Make fantasy backgrounds for the dolls to tie into the other artists.
Just throwing ideas out there. Hope I could help.
