Now, this week I made the very stupid mistake of trying to shoplift an item from sears in CA that was of $18 value. I know that this was a very stupid mistake and I have learned my lesson. The Loss Prevention guys that detained me said that they would not press charges but that I was banned from the mall for a year, They were pretty polite and amiable because I was very cooperative. What they ended up ding was taking my name ,address, SN#, and photo down. Jokingly one said that I would get a civil demand in the mail for $400, but later he said he was just kidding around and that it would probably be a max of 5x the amount shoplifted, which by my calculations would not exceed 100. The firm that collects these in sears is civil demands associates, inc.
My question is which amount is correct? I've read many different stories online and it varies.
Also, is there anyone out there who went through similar situation?
